Stress is the result of change. It debilitates employees and haunts workplaces. Once it takes root, the workplace becomes intolerable: employees get sick, gain weight, get wrinkles, and turn gray. Personalities alter, problem solving declines, frustration increases, and self-esteem diminishes. Feelings of animosity towards work and the employer grow. Productivity decreases while workplace hostility increases.
Organizations can take steps to diminish stressors on employees, and employees can use strategies to resolve the stress in their lives. Unfortunately, lack of practical information often prevents either approach from resolving the issue.
Employers who implement "One Size Fits All" stress relief programs usually fail. The traditional "Stress Relieving Tips" and "Just Relax and Breathe" advice can actually raise employees' stress levels. Stress solutions must be personalized to be effective. Employees need to be taught how to identify the root of their stress and how to craft personal release strategies to manage the stressors in their work environment.
